The stage last week for three Democratic state Assembly hopefuls was a College of San Mateo classroom with three blue plastic chairs arranged tightly beneath the whiteboard. The audience was about 30 students, some bleary-eyed for the 10 a.m. Thursday class but filling every seat for Political Science 310: “California State and Local Government.” And the stump speeches were generally predictable in one of the early debates among San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill, Millbrae Mayor Gina Papan and community college district Trustee Richard Holober.
The Seventh Annual I Have A Dream National Youth Assembly recently attracted 1,400 youth from across the country to study the teachings of civil rights martyr Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Motivational speakers, community leaders and celebrities challenged the youthful participants to become drum majors for peace and justice. Actor Charles Dutton, in a special address, encouraged participants to set high standards and charged them not to let their past dictate their future.

Volunteer Mentors Empower The Youth Activities Task Force consists of government employees and other interested adults who serve as mentor-counselors to young people aged 14 to 21. Since it was organized in 1982 as an ad-hoc community group concerned about meeting the needs of young people in Southwest Washington, the Task Force has placed as estimated 450 to 500 teens in summer positions. In a 10-week orientation/training period designed to nurture in the teens a sense of achievement and self-esteem, mentors help the youth-who are primarily from disadvantaged, single-parent or low-income families-prepare resumes, master the job interview process, and develop marketable skills. Barbara Hurlbutt, who has participated in the program since it was launched, notes that the Task Force gives the teen interns an entree into the employment world and a “leg up” into permanent white collar or skilled jobs. She notes: “One of the primary advantages of our program is that it teaches youths what is expected of them in the job world so they wont experience culture shock. They learn that there are consequences to their behavior and actions, and they come to see the link between the Task Force experience and their paychecks. They learn how to seize initiative, budget money and be responsible. The Task Force offers guidance and information to help the kids develop good work habits and discipline, and it regularly monitors their employment progress.”

Daimler-Benz yesterday decided not to let its German rivals leave it in the dust in super-luxury cars, approving plans to go ahead with production of a limousine to compete with Rolls-Royce. As Volkswagen and BMW reached a settlement on taking over Rolls brands, Daimlers management board gave the go-ahead for production of the Maybach, which it has previewed at auto shows for the past year. “With the positive decision for the production of the Mercedes- Benz Maybach, we are underscoring once more our claim to represent the absolute top in every market segment,” said Daimler chief executive Mr Jurgen Schrempp.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

The protocol for teaching students from junior high school to graduate school often involves desks arrayed in columns and rows. Sitting at these desks are students who, just last night, read the next chapter of the textbook and who now listen to a teachers lecture and take notes. This traditional approach is probably as effective as anything else for the memorization of large quantities of facts. Moreover, it is arguably much easier to tell students that water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit than it is to set up a stove and a thermometer and observe what happens when the temperature of the water on the stove reaches that temperature. Critics of the traditional instruction method complain that the facts that students memorize in this fashion usually do not remain in their memories for long. If students are lucky, the facts will stay in their memories until the examination is over. If not, they will be remembered as poor students. They also argue that the accomplishment of memorizing facts does not necessarily demonstrate any ability to do anything with those facts. The knowledge of facts may be substantially separate from what the implications of the facts look like. It is one thing to tell a medical student what a gangrenous liver looks like; it is quite another to direct the medical student to dissect an actual gangrenous liver and observe its appearance. Furthermore, traditional instruction trains students to be independent actors in the learning process. The notions of working together and working cooperatively have been denounced as methods of cheating. Accordingly, students are not trained to work with others and that can prove to be problematic when they enter an employment setting where cooperation is necessary for success.

Limousine has diverse meanings, from an inhabitant of the region around Limoges, once called Limousin, and which in the 18th century was looked at askance as home to “an old barbarous French, formerly brought into this country out of France”. The OED overlooks the limousine which was a cloak worn by the driver of a cart whose passenger section was shielded from the elements - hence the vehicle itself and all those gaudy, dark- windowed successors which could house nine cows.
A trip in a stretched limousine has rew- arded Fartown High School pupils. Six students were given the special trip for having a 100% attendance record in the school year and for improving behaviour. The students were driven from school to Scammonden Water, where they enjoyed games and a picnic. The initiative was org- anised by teacher Joanne Carter and project worker Sarah Clarke.

I seized the opportunity to attend the 129th General Assembly as a Young Adult Representative. This was not my first assembly as I was also a YAR in 1995. I knew what to expect — or thought I did. But believe it or not, at the ripe old age of 24, I can still be surprised. The week continued pleasantly, surprising me. I had forgotten how quickly the YARs bonded at my first assembly. Normally when 16 young adults gather, groups start forming; but that was not the case this year. By Sunday (our second night), all 16 young adults were moving about freely together, talking, singing and debating with one another. It amazes me how individuals from across Canada, with different school and job experiences, different hobbies and tastes in music, and different life challenges, can come together and bond just because we follow the same spiritual path. We played Frisbee outside and walked in Guelph Universitys sculpture garden. We enjoyed nights of singing praise to Gods power, grace, understanding and birth (yes, we sang a Christmas carol). We debated Gods Word, talked about upcoming assembly issues and shared our lives. Spending 18 to 20 hours a day (we survived on little sleep) focusing on God through worship, sederunts and fellowship is a surreal experience. Not being distracted by a busy workday, family obligations and the mass media creates an environment where being close to God all day is easy. My challenge at home is to keep that feeling alive and live it at work, at play and with family and friends.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

Maximizing the productivity of Kmarts core assets is a critical component to Chuck Conaways master plan to take the company to new levels of performance. And nowhere does Kmart stand to benefit more from its assets than in apparel, where both the executives and the brands are among the best things going for the chain. In January, Nagler was named senior vp and gmm in a realignment that eliminated a level of management in the apparel sector. Naglers elevation to the top apparel post was consistent with other changes within Kmarts executive suite that have emphasized the establishment of clearer spheres of accountability and a simpler delineation of responsibility. Nagler, who was once responsible solely for childrens wear, oversaw the successful development of Sesame Street in this segment, and later the expansion of the Route 66 brand in mens. Additionally, she supervised the expansion of the big mens program at Kmart, a program slated for greater emphasis going forward. Also, since she had past experience in womens–including stints at Federated Department Stores and The Limited–she was an eminently reasonable choice to head up Kmarts overall apparel operation.

The General Assembly on 4 December adopted six resolutions without a vote on a wide range of social concerns - youth, crime prevention and criminal justice, aging, and the disabled. The Assembly, in resolution 41/97 asked the Secretary-General to promote intensively the inclusion of youth-related projects and activities in United Nations programmes and stressed the importance of the active and direct participation of youth and youth organizations in activities organized at the national, regional and international levels. Governments were urged to undertake the necessary measures to strengthen their focus on youth programmes and policies and were invited to consider the regular inclusion of youth representatives in their delegations to the General Assembly and other relevant United Nations meetings.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

GREAT food, cheap wine and an unspoilt landscape make France the most popular destination with Britons for short breaks and longer holidays. JACQUI THAKE takes a trip through the countryside of Limousin. AS we planned the morning hike across the countryside of Limousin our French hostess urged us: “Make sure you wear your baskets.” Confusion turned to hilarity when we realised that baskets in French meant trainers. Anyway, suitably booted for our expedition round the magnificent Lac du Causse in the Couze Valley, we set off in high spirits as the sun had come out at last.

Are you the classic visionary entrepreneur? Do you own a small company that just landed the deal, the one that will take you to the next level? You might be facing growth challenges, and building an effective management and leadership team should be high on your priority list. To build a better team, you should evaluate the companys goals and then its management talent and skill level. Then, says Gibb Dyer, the O. Leslie Stone professor of entrepreneurship at Brigham Young University, you can assess what skills you have to grow the business and what skills you dont. The question becomes, how do you bridge the gap? Dyer believes a company should focus on four key areas: finance, marketing, HR and operations. What you find in small businesses, says Dyer, is a lack of technical skills, and because you have a lack of technical skills, positions are poorly filled. You have your HR person doing marketing. Build a foundation with a strong board of directors. Most boards in small businesses, Dyer says, are nonexistent or function poorly. A good board is critical to the continued success of a company. The board helps measure and critique management talent and need. The board should also look at periodic financial statements to review the companys performance. A well-connected board can be useful in filling specific skill positions.
Team building is popular with most companies management and has been so for the past few years, as evidenced Dilbert. Its not actually easy to build a team using team-building activities. Cynicism aside, it does happen like that sometimes, and anyone whos been part of it knows it can be wonderful. The trouble is, you simply cant summons up a successful project. Management, consultants, and trainers think you can generate strong team feelings with a simulated project or a social event. Its worth a try, but far from easy to come up with a team-building event that doesnt cause more trouble than it solves. For example, picture Dilbert, Tina, Alice, and the gang accidentally feeding a teammate to a bear.

A MOBILE youth club catering for teenagers in rural areas has secured funding to keep it running for the next year. Derwentsides Ellie Bus was launched in 2005 to provide young people in the district with something to do. Funded on a yearly basis, pounds 23,000 has now been allocated by the district council to make sure the bus can continue visiting areas across the district throughout the year. The decision to fund the service was made by the councils executive committee.
One of the interesting takeaways from the bustling RSA Conference last month was the plethora of companies offering managed security services. I talked with at least seven companies at the San Francisco event that provide such services, which equates to about one-fourth of the vendors I met with. But are their customers ready to hand over their network security oversight? In our recently completed Subscriber Profile Survey, only 11 percent of respondents said they plan to purchase any managed services this year, with a smaller percentage than that presumably in the market for managed security services. (The survey did not ask specifically about managed security services.) In contrast, 39 percent of those polled plan to buy security hardware or software in 2008.
North American, European, and Asian service providers that sell managed VPNs and security services plan to invest heavily in integrated services in 2005, with most combining five or six different technologies into a single service, led by firewall, content filtering and VPN, according to a new study released by Infonetics Research. The study, Service Provider Plans for VPNs and Security 2005, finds that North American and Asian Pacific providers get the bulk of their revenue from integrated services, while European providers get the bulk of revenue from standalone services.

The researchers also conducted an online survey of 644 individuals who reported actively considering surgery. Interviewees said they thought they could minimize their risks by researching the procedure and the surgeons who specialize in that area. Two-thirds of the interview participants said the potential risks would not deter them from seeking surgery, while one-third said they would need to weigh the risks and benefits carefully. The research was funded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

In spite of the fact that overall retail sales in Germany fell 2.2 percent in May 2006 (when compared with April 2006) furniture sales in Germany rose 7.4 percent in a similar comparison. The figures were reported by Bloomberg News on June 30, 2006. The strength shown by furniture sales in Germany appears to have been reported in the region generally. A separate Bloomberg News report, published on July 6, 2006, said that retail sales in the eurozone rose for the third straight month. An index of retail sales increased to 55.1 in June 2006, the second highest level since the index began in January 2004.
